  • January 1, 2011 – Estonia officially adopts the Euro currency and becomes the seventeenth eurozone country.
  • January 14, 2011 – Ben Ali, former Tunisian president, fled the country to Saudi Arabia after popular protests (dubbed as Jasmine Revolution) requesting his departure.
  • January 25, 2011 – Egyptian Revolution of 2011 begins in Egypt, with a series of street demonstrations, marches, rallies, acts of civil disobedience, riots, labour strikes, and violent clashes in Cairo, Alexandria, and throughout other cities in Egypt.
  • January 28, 2011 – Hundreds of thousands of protesters filled up the Egyptian’s streets in demonstrations referred to as “Friday of Anger” against the Mubarak regime.
  • February 3, 2011 – New Year’s Day in Chinese calendar. Start of the year of the Metal Rabbit in Chinese astrology.
  • February 24, 2011 – Final Launch of Space Shuttle Discovery (OV-103).
  • February 25, 2011 – In the Irish general election, the Fianna Fáil-led government suffered the worst defeat of a sitting government since the formation of the Irish state in 1921.
  • May 1, 2011 – Pope John Paul II is beatified by his successor, Pope Benedict XVI.
  • May 13, 2011 – the 2011 Charsadda bombing in the Charsadda District of Pakistan two bombs exploded killing 98 and wounding 140.
  • July 8, 2011 – Space Shuttle Atlantis is launched in the final mission of the U.S. Space Shuttle program.
  • July 9, 2011 – South Sudan gains independence and secedes from Sudan.
  • July 22, 2011 – Norway is the victim of twin terror attacks, the first being a bomb blast which targeted government buildings in central Oslo, the second being a massacre at a youth camp on the island of Utøya.
  • August 2, 2011 – Three Rapid City, South Dakota officers stop a group of suspicious people on Anamosa Street. One man pulls out a revolver and fires six shots, killing one officer, mortally wounding another, and injuring the third.
  • August 6, 2011 – A helicopter containing members of Navy SEAL 6 is shot down in Afghanistan killing 38.
  • August 26, 2011 – The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Boeing’s all-new composite airliner, receives certification from the EASA and the FAA
  • September 20, 2011 – The United States ends its “Don't Ask, Don't Tell” policy, allowing gay men and women to serve openly for the first time.
  • October 15, 2011 – Global protests break out in 951 cities in 82 countries.
  • October 20, 2011 – The former leader of Libya, Muammar Gaddafi, and his son Moatassem Gaddafi are killed shortly after the battle of Sirte (2011) while in the custody of NTC fighters.
  • October 23, 2011 – A powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake strikes Van Province, Turkey, killing 582 people and injuring thousands.
  • November 6, 2011 – Pedro Gonçalves survives an acute type A aortic dissection
