  • January 1, 2009 – 66 die in a nightclub fire in Bangkok, Thailand.
  • January 23, 2009 – Dendermonde nursery attack in Dendermonde, Belgium.
  • January 26, 2009 – New Year’s Day in Chinese calendar. Start of the year of the Earth Ox in Chinese astrology.
  • February 1, 2009 – Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir is chosen the first female Prime Minister of Iceland, becoming the first openly gay head of government in the modern world.
  • February 25, 2009 – BDR massacre in Pilkhana, Dhaka, Bangladesh. 74 people are killed, including more than 50 army officials, by Bangladeshi Border Guards inside its headquarters.
  • March 3, 2009 – The building of the Historisches Archiv der Stadt Köln (Historical Archives) in Cologne, Germany, collapses.
  • March 7, 2009 – The Kepler space observatory, designed to discover Earth-like planets orbiting other stars, is launched.
  • March 22, 2009 – Mount Redoubt, a volcano in Alaska begins erupting after a prolonged period of unrest.
  • April 6, 2009 – A 6.3 magnitude earthquake strikes near L'Aquila, Italy, killing 307.
  • April 10, 2009 – President of Fiji Ratu Josefa Iloilo announces he will suspend the constitution and assume all governance in the country, creating a constitutional crisis.
  • April 30, 2009 – Seven people are killed and 17 injured at a Queen’s Day parade in Apeldoorn, Netherlands.
  • May 1, 2009 – Same-sex marriage is legalized in Sweden.
  • June 19, 2009 – Mass riots involving over 10,000 people and 10,000 police officers break out in Shishou, China, over the dubious circumstances surrounding the death of a local chef.
  • July 24, 2009 – The MV Arctic Sea, reportedly carrying a cargo of timber, is allegedly hijacked in the North Sea by pirates, but much speculation remains as to the actual cargo and events.
  • August 10, 2009 – Twenty people are killed in Handlová, Trenčín Region, in the deadliest mining disaster in Slovakia’s history.
  • September 26, 2009 – Typhoon Ketsana (2009) hit the Philippines, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand, causing 700 fatalities.
  • October 1, 2009 – The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom takes over the judicial functions of the House of Lords.
  • October 9, 2009 – First lunar impact of the Centaur and LCROSS spacecrafts as part of NASA’s Lunar Precursor Robotic Program.
  • October 25, 2009 – The 25 October 2009 Baghdad bombings kills 155 and wounds at least 721.
  • December 1, 2009 – The Treaty of Lisbon, which amends the Treaty on European Union and the Treaty establishing the European Community, which together comprise the constitutional basis of European Union, comes into effect.
