- January 14, 2000 – A United Nations tribunal sentences five Bosnian Croats to up to 25 years for the 1993 killing of over 100 Muslims in a Bosnian village.
- January 31, 2000 – Alaska Airlines Flight 261 crash: An MD-83, experiencing horizontal stabilizer problems, crashes in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Point Mugu, California, killing all 88 aboard.
- February 5, 2000 – New Year’s Day in Chinese calendar. Start of the year of the Metal Dragon in Chinese astrology.
- February 13, 2000 – The last original “Peanuts” comic strip appears in newspapers one day after Charles M. Schulz dies.
- February 15, 2000 – Indian Point II nuclear power plant in New York State vents a small amount of radioactive steam when a steam generator fails.
- March 17, 2000 – More than 800 members of the Ugandan cult Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God die in what is considered to be a mass murder and suicide orchestrated by leaders of the cult.
- March 20, 2000 – Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, a former Black Panther once known as H. Rap Brown, is captured after murdering Georgia sheriff’s deputy Ricky Kinchen and critically wounding Deputy Aldranon English.
- April 22, 2000 – The Big Number Change takes place in the United Kingdom.
- May 2, 2000 – President Bill Clinton announces that accurate GPS access would no longer be restricted to the United States military.
- May 11, 2000 – Second Chechen War: Chechen separatists ambush Russian paramilitary forces in the Republic of Ingushetia.
- June 13, 2000 – President Kim Dae Jung of South Korea meets Kim Jong-il, leader of North Korea, for the beginning of the first ever inter-Korea summit, in the northern capital of Pyongyang.
- July 14, 2000 – A powerful solar flare, later named the Bastille Day event, causes a geomagnetic storm on Earth.
- September 14, 2000 – Microsoft releases Windows Me.
- September 26, 2000 – The MS Express Samina sinks off Paros in the Agean sea killing 80 passengers.
- October 5, 2000 – Mass demonstrations in Belgrade lead to resignation of Serbian strongman Slobodan Milošević. These demonstrations are often called the Bulldozer Revolution.
- October 31, 2000 – A chartered Antonov An-26 explodes after takeoff in Northern Angola killing 50.
- November 1, 2000 – Serbia joins the United Nations.
- November 7, 2000 – The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration discovers one of the country’s largest LSD labs inside a converted military missile silo in Wamego, Kansas.
- November 25, 2000 – The 2000 Baku Earthquake takes place, Richter magnitude of 7.0, leaving 26 people dead in Baku, Azerbaijan and becoming the strongest earthquake in the region in 158 years.
