- January 4, 1999 – Former professional wrestler Jesse Ventura is sworn in as governor of Minnesota.
- February 16, 1999 – New Year’s Day in Chinese calendar. Start of the year of the Earth Rabbit in Chinese astrology.
- February 23, 1999 – An avalanche destroys the Austrian village of Galtür, killing 31.
- March 21, 1999 – Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones become the first to circumnavigate the Earth in a hot air balloon.
- March 24, 1999 – Mont Blanc Tunnel fire kills 38 people
- June 9, 1999 – Kosovo War: the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and NATO sign a peace treaty.
- July 5, 1999 – Wolverhampton, England is hit by storms which include a tornado. The area is hit again with severe storms on August 1.
- August 15, 1999 – Beni Ounif massacre in Algeria; some 29 people are killed at a false roadblock near the Moroccan border, leading to temporary tensions with Morocco.
- September 14, 1999 – Kiribati, Nauru and Tonga join the United Nations.
- September 23, 1999 – Qantas Flight 1 overruns the runway in Bangkok during a storm. Although some passengers only receive minor injuries, it is still the worst crash in Qantas’s history since 1960.
- October 5, 1999 – The Ladbroke Grove rail crash in west London kills 31 people.
- October 9, 1999 – The last flight of the SR-71.
- October 12, 1999 – The former Autonomous Soviet Republic of Abkhazia declares its independence from Georgia
- October 13, 1999 – The United States Senate rejects ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).
- November 18, 1999 – In College Station, Texas, 12 are killed and 27 injured at Texas A&M University when the 59 ft Aggie Bonfire, under construction for the annual football game against the University of Texas, collapses at 2:42am.
- November 25, 1999 – The United Nations establishes the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women to commemorate the murder of three Mirabal Sisters for resistance against the Rafael Trujillo dictatorship in Dominican Republic.
- December 2, 1999 – Glenbrook rail accident near Sydney, New South Wales.
- December 7, 1999 – The Recording Industry Association of America files a lawsuit against the Napster file-sharing client alleging copyright infringement.
- December 20, 1999 – Macau is handed over to the People’s Republic of China by Portugal.
