- February 13, 1970 – Black Sabbath, arguably the very first heavy metal album, is released.
- February 18, 1970 – The Chicago Seven are found not guilty of conspiring to incite riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention.
- March 18, 1970 – Lon Nol ousts Prince Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia.
- April 8, 1970 – Bahr el-Baqar incident: Israeli bombers strike an Egyptian school. 46 children are killed.
- April 11, 1970 – Apollo 13 is launched.
- April 13, 1970 – An oxygen tank aboard Apollo 13 explodes, putting the crew in great danger and causing major damage to the spacecraft while en route to the Moon.

- July 21, 1970 – After 11 years of construction, the Aswan High Dam in Egypt is completed.
- August 23, 1970 – Organized by Mexican American union leader César Chávez, the Salad Bowl strike, the largest farm worker strike in U.S. history, begins.
- September 9, 1970 – A British airliner is hijacked by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and flown to Dawson’s Field in Jordan.
- September 11, 1970 – The Dawson’s Field hijackers release 88 of their hostages. The remaining hostages, mostly Jews and Israeli citizens, are held until September 25.
- September 16, 1970 – King Hussein of Jordan declares military rule following the hijacking of four civilian airliners by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). This results in the formation of the Black September Palestinian paramilitary unit.
- October 8, 1970 – Vietnam War: In Paris, a Communist delegation rejects US President Richard Nixon’s October 7 peace proposal as “a maneuver to deceive world opinion”.
- October 20, 1970 – Siad Barre declares Somalia a socialist state.
