- January 10, 1946 – The first General Assembly of the United Nations opens in London. Fifty-one nations are represented.
- January 22, 1946 – Creation of the Central Intelligence Group, forerunner of the Central Intelligence Agency.
- February 2, 1946 – New Year’s Day in Chinese calendar. Start of the year of the Fire Dog in Chinese astrology.
- February 12, 1946 – World War II: Operation Deadlight ends after scuttling 121 of 154 captured U-boats.
- February 18, 1946 – Sailors of the Royal Indian Navy mutinied in Mumbai harbour, from where it would spread throughout British India and involve 78 ships, 20 shore establishments and 20,000 sailors
- March 18, 1946 – Diplomatic relations between Switzerland and the Soviet Union are established.
- March 28, 1946 – Cold War: The United States State Department releases the Acheson–Lilienthal Report, outlining a plan for the international control of nuclear power.
- April 1, 1946 – Formation of the Malayan Union.
- April 8, 1946 – Électricité de France, the world’s largest utility company, is formed as a result of the nationalisation of a number of electricity producers, transporters and distributors.
- May 1, 1946 – The Paris Peace Conference concludes that the islands of the Dodecanese should be returned to Greece by Italy.
- May 2, 1946 – The “Battle of Alcatraz” takes place, killing two guards and three inmates.
- May 10, 1946 – First successful launch of an American V-2 rocket at White Sands Proving Ground.
- June 2, 1946 – Birth of the Italian Republic: In a referendum, Italians vote to turn Italy from a monarchy into a Republic. After the referendum the king of Italy Umberto II di Savoia is exiled.
- July 10, 1946 – Hungarian hyperinflation sets a record with inflation of 348.46 percent per day, or prices doubling every eleven hours.
- September 24, 1946 – Clark Clifford and George Elsey, military advisers to U.S. President Harry S. Truman, present him with a top-secret report on the Soviet Union that first recommends the containment policy.
- November 19, 1946 – Afghanistan, Iceland and Sweden join the United Nations.
- December 7, 1946 – A fire at the Winecoff Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia kills 119 people, the deadliest hotel fire in U.S. history.
- December 9, 1946 – The “Subsequent Nuremberg Trials” begin with the “Doctors’ Trial”, prosecuting doctors alleged to be involved in human experimentation.
- December 14, 1946 – The United Nations General Assembly votes to establish its headquarters in New York City.
- December 31, 1946 – President Harry S. Truman officially proclaims the end of hostilities in World War II.
