- January 1, 1945 – World War II: Operation Nordwind, the last major German offensive on the Western Front begins.
- February 5, 1945 – World War II: General Douglas MacArthur returns to Manila.

- February 23, 1945 – World War II: The capital of the Philippines, Manila, is liberated by combined Filipino and American forces.

- March 10, 1945 – The U.S. Army Air Force firebombs Tokyo, and the resulting firestorm kills more than 100,000 people, mostly civilians.

- April 8, 1945 – World War II: After an air raid accidentally destroys a train carrying about 4,000 Nazi concentration camp internees in Prussian Hanover, the survivors are massacred by Nazis.
- April 25, 1945 – The Nazi occupation army surrenders and leaves Northern Italy after a general partisan insurrection by the Italian resistance movement; the puppet fascist regime dissolves and Benito Mussolini tries to escape. This day is taken as symbolic of the Liberation of Italy.
- May 2, 1945 – World War II: The US 82nd Airborne Division liberates Wöbbelin concentration camp finding 1000 dead inmates, most starved to death.
- May 9, 1945 – World War II: The Channel Islands are liberated by the British after five years of German occupation.
- June 5, 1945 – The Allied Control Council, the military occupation governing body of Germany, formally takes power.
- August 31, 1945 – The Liberal Party of Australia is founded by Robert Menzies.
- September 2, 1945 – Vietnam declares its independence, forming the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
- September 16, 1945 – World War II: The surrender of the Japanese troops in Hong Kong. The surrender is accepted by the Royal Navy Admiral Sir Cecil Harcourt.
- October 21, 1945 – Women’s suffrage: Women are allowed to vote in France for the first time.
- December 15, 1945 – Occupation of Japan: General Douglas MacArthur orders that Shinto be abolished as the state religion of Japan.
