What Happened In Year 1924?

  • January 16, 1924 – Eleftherios Venizelos becomes Prime Minister of Greece for the fourth time.
  • February 1, 1924 – The United Kingdom recognizes the USSR.
  • February 5, 1924 – The Royal Greenwich Observatory begins broadcasting the hourly time signals known as the Greenwich Time Signal or the “BBC pips”.
  • February 8, 1924 – Capital punishment: The first state execution in the United States by gas chamber takes place in Nevada.
  • February 14, 1924 – The Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company changes its name to International Business Machines Corporation (IBM).
  • March 3, 1924 – The 1400-year-old Islamic caliphate is abolished when Caliph Abdul Mejid II of the Ottoman Empire is deposed. The last remnant of the old regime gives way to the reformed Turkey of Kemal Atatürk.
  • April 1, 1924 – Adolf Hitler is sentenced to five years in jail for his participation in the “Beer Hall Putsch”. However, he spends only nine months in jail, during which he writes Mein Kampf.
  • April 15, 1924 – Rand McNally publishes its first road atlas.
  • April 18, 1924 – Simon & Schuster publishes the first crossword puzzle book.
  • May 10, 1924 – J. Edgar Hoover is appointed the Director of the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation, and remains so until his death in 1972.
  • May 29, 1924 – AEK Athens FC is established on the anniversary of the siege of Constantinople by the Turks.
  • July 24, 1924 – Archeologist Themistoklis Sofoulis becomes Prime Minister of Greece.
  • September 9, 1924 – Hanapepe Massacre occurs on Kauai, Hawaii.
  • October 7, 1924 – Andreas Michalakopoulos becomes Prime Minister of Greece for a short period of time.
  • October 22, 1924 – Toastmasters International is founded.
  • October 31, 1924 – World Savings Day is announced in Milan, Italy by the Members of the Association at the 1st International Savings Bank Congress (World Society of Savings Banks).
  • November 4, 1924 – Nellie Tayloe Ross of Wyoming is elected the first female governor in the United States.
  • November 11, 1924 – Prime Minister Alexandros Papanastasiou proclaims the first recognized Greek Republic.
  • December 20, 1924 – Hitler is released from Landsberg Prison
