What Happened In Year 1898?

  • January 1, 1898 – New York, New York annexes land from surrounding counties, creating the City of Greater New York. The four initial boroughs, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and The Bronx, are joined on January 25 by Staten Island to create the modern city of five boroughs.
  • January 12, 1898 – Ito Hirobumi begins his third term as Prime Minister of Japan.
  • February 7, 1898 – Émile Zola is brought to trial for libel for publishing J'Accuse.
  • February 15, 1898 – Spanish-American War: The USS Maine explodes and sinks in Havana harbor in Cuba, killing more than 260. This event leads the United States to declare war on Spain.
  • April 22, 1898 – Spanish-American War: The United States Navy begins a blockade of Cuban ports and the USS Nashville captures a Spanish merchant ship.
  • June 10, 1898 – Spanish-American War: U.S. Marines land on the island of Cuba.
  • June 11, 1898 – The Hundred Days’ Reform is started by Guangxu Emperor with a plan to change social, political and educational institutions in China, but is suspended by Empress Dowager Cixi after 104 days. The failed reform though led to the abolition of Imperial Examination in 1905.
  • June 12, 1898 – Philippine Declaration of Independence: General Emilio Aguinaldo declares the Philippines’ independence from Spain.
  • June 21, 1898 – The United States captures Guam from Spain.
  • July 25, 1898 – After over two months of sea-based bombardment, the United States invasion of Puerto Rico begins with U.S. troops led by General Nelson Miles landing at harbor of Guánica, Puerto Rico.
  • August 12, 1898 – The Hawaiian flag is lowered from Iolani Palace in an elaborate annexation ceremony and replaced with the flag of the United States to signify the transfer of sovereignty from the Republic of Hawai`i to the United States.
  • August 13, 1898 – Carl Gustav Witt discovers 433 Eros, the first near-Earth asteroid to be found.
  • August 28, 1898 – Caleb Bradham invents the carbonated soft drink that will later be called “Pepsi-Cola”.
  • August 29, 1898 – The Goodyear tire company is founded.
  • September 2, 1898 – Battle of Omdurman – British and Egyptian troops defeat Sudanese tribesmen and establish British dominance in Sudan.
  • October 6, 1898 – Ossian Everett Mills founds Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia in Boston, Massachusetts.
  • October 14, 1898 – The steamer ship SS Mohegan sinks after impacting the Manacles near Cornwall, United Kingdom, killing 106.
  • October 18, 1898 – United States takes possession of Puerto Rico.
  • December 18, 1898 – Gaston de Chasseloup-Laubat sets the first officially recognized land speed record of 39.245 mi/h in a Jeantaud electric car.
  • December 26, 1898 – Marie and Pierre Curie announce the isolation of radium.
