- March 7, 1862 – American Civil War: Union forces defeat Confederate troops at Pea Ridge in northwestern Arkansas.
- March 8, 1862 – American Civil War: The iron-clad Ship CSS (formerly USS Merrimack) is launched at Hampton Roads, Virginia.

- October 8, 1862 – American Civil War: Battle of Perryville – Union forces under General Don Carlos Buell halt the Confederate invasion of Kentucky by defeating troops led by General Braxton Bragg at Perryville, Kentucky.
- November 28, 1862 – American Civil War: In the Battle of Cane Hill, Union troops under General James G. Blunt defeat General John Marmaduke’s Confederates.
- December 26, 1862 – The largest mass-hanging in U.S. history took place in Mankato, Minnesota, 38 Native Americans die.
