- February 6, 1843 – The first minstrel show in the United States, The Virginia Minstrels, opens (Bowery Amphitheatre in New York City).
- February 11, 1843 – Giuseppe Verdi’s opera I Lombardi receives its first performance in Milan.
- February 14, 1843 – The event that inspired the Beatles song Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite! is held in England.
- February 25, 1843 – Provisional Cession of the Hawaiian or Sandwich Islands established by Lord George Paulet.
- May 16, 1843 – The first major wagon train heading for the Pacific Northwest sets out on the Oregon Trail with one thousand pioneers from Elm Grove, Missouri.
- May 18, 1843 – The Disruption in Edinburgh of the Free Church of Scotland from the Church of Scotland.
- May 22, 1843 – Thousands of people and their cattle head west via wagon train from Independence, Missouri to what would later become the Oregon Territory. It is part of the Great Migration. They follow what is now known as the Oregon Trail.
- July 12, 1843 – 1843 – Joseph Smith, Jr., founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, proclaimed a revelation recommending polygamy.
- July 19, 1843 – Brunel’s steamship the SS Great Britain is launched, becoming the first ocean-going craft with an iron hull or screw propeller and also becoming the largest vessel afloat in the world.
- August 15, 1843 – The Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace in Honolulu, Hawaii is dedicated. Now the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu, it is the oldest Roman Catholic cathedral in continuous use in the United States.
- September 13, 1843 – The Greek Army rebels (OS date: September 3) against the autocratic rule of king Otto of Greece, demanding the granting of a constitution.
- October 1, 1843 – The News of the World tabloid begins publication in London.
- October 13, 1843 – In New York City, Henry Jones and 11 others found B'nai B'rith (the oldest Jewish service organization in the world).
- October 14, 1843 – The British arrest the Irish nationalist Daniel O'Connell for conspiracy to commit crimes.
- October 16, 1843 – Sir William Rowan Hamilton comes up with the idea of quaternions, a non-commutative extension of complex numbers.
- November 28, 1843 – Ka Lā Hui: Hawaiian Independence Day – The Kingdom of Hawaii is officially recognized by the United Kingdom and France as an independent nation.
- December 19, 1843 – Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol goes on sale.
