- January 29, 1834 – US President Andrew Jackson orders first use of federal soldiers to suppress a labor dispute.
- February 3, 1834 – Wake Forest University is established.
- March 6, 1834 – York, Upper Canada is incorporated as Toronto.
- March 18, 1834 – Six farm labourers from Tolpuddle, Dorset, England are sentenced to be transported to Australia for forming a trade union.
- April 3, 1834 – The generals in the Greek War of Independence stand trial for treason.
- May 30, 1834 – Joaquim António de Aguiar issue a law extinguishing “all convents, monasteries, colleges, hospices and any other houses of the regular religious orders”, earning him the nickname of “The Friar-Killer”.
- July 7, 1834 – In New York City, four nights of rioting against abolitionists began.
- August 1, 1834 – Slavery is abolished in the British Empire as the Slavery Abolition Act 1833 comes into force.
- October 9, 1834 – Opening of the Dublin and Kingstown Railway, the first public railway on the island of Ireland.
- October 16, 1834 – Much of the ancient structure of the Palace of Westminster in London burns to the ground.
- October 28, 1834 – The Battle of Pinjarra is fought in the Swan River Colony in present-day Pinjarra, Western Australia. Between 14 and 40 Aborigines are killed by British colonists.
- December 1, 1834 – Slavery is abolished in the Cape Colony in accordance with the Slavery Abolition Act 1833.
- December 3, 1834 – The Zollverein (German Customs Union) begins the first regular census in Germany.
