- January 3, 1823 – Stephen F. Austin receives a grant of land in Texas from the government of Mexico.
- July 2, 1823 – Bahia Independence Day: the end of Portuguese rule in Brazil, with the final defeat of the Portuguese crown loyalists in the province of Bahia.
- July 15, 1823 – A fire destroys the ancient Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome.
- July 24, 1823 – Slavery is abolished in Chile.
- September 10, 1823 – Simón Bolívar is named President of Peru.
- September 21, 1823 – Joseph Smith is reportedly visited by the angel Moroni, who told him the location of gold plates, which Smith obtained four years later and partially translated into The Book of Mormon.
