- January 1, 1803 – Emperor Gia Long orders all bronze wares of the Tây Sơn Dynasty to be collected and melted into nine cannons for the Royal Citadel in Huế, Vietnam.
- February 24, 1803 – In Marbury v. Madison, the Supreme Court of the United States establishes the principle of judicial review.
- March 1, 1803 – Ohio is admitted as the 17th U.S. state.
- April 26, 1803 – Thousands of meteor fragments fall from the skies of L'Aigle, France; the event convinces European science that meteors exist.
- April 30, 1803 – Louisiana Purchase: The United States purchases the Louisiana Territory from France for $15 million, more than doubling the size of the young nation.
- May 18, 1803 – Napoleonic Wars: The United Kingdom revokes the Treaty of Amiens and declares war on France.

- September 23, 1803 – Second Anglo-Maratha War: Battle of Assaye between the British East India Company and the Maratha Empire in India.
- October 20, 1803 – The United States Senate ratifies the Louisiana Purchase.
- November 18, 1803 – The Battle of Vertières, the last major battle of the Haitian Revolution, is fought, leading to the establishment of the Republic of Haiti, the first black republic in the Western Hemisphere.
- November 30, 1803 – In New Orleans, Louisiana, Spanish representatives officially transfer the Louisiana Territory to a French representative. Just 20 days later, France transfers the same land to the United States as the Louisiana Purchase.
- December 20, 1803 – The Louisiana Purchase is completed at a ceremony in New Orleans.
