- January 30, 1703 – The Forty-seven Ronin, under the command of Ōishi Kuranosuke, avenge the death of their master.
- February 4, 1703 – In Edo (now Tokyo), 46 of the Forty-seven Ronin commit seppuku (ritual suicide) as recompense for avenging their master’s death.
- May 27, 1703 – Tsar Peter the Great founds the city of Saint Petersburg.
- July 31, 1703 – Daniel Defoe is placed in a pillory for the crime of seditious libel after publishing a politically satirical pamphlet, but is pelted with flowers.
- November 25, 1703 – The Great Storm of 1703, the greatest windstorm ever recorded in the southern part of Great Britain, reaches its peak intensity which it maintains through November 27. Winds gust up to 120 mph, and 9,000 people die.
